The national Spinal Awareness Week 2017 campaign runs from Monday 15th May to Friday 19th May. The theme is “Chiropractic for Children – Checking future adults…today!”.
Spinal Awareness Week is organised by the United Chiropractic Association. The aim of the 2017 campaign is to promote the huge benefits chiropractic can have on the children within our communities, and how Chiropractic keeps children connected not just within themselves, but also in many forms of their overall health & vitality. The aim is to instil the values of how having children checked by a chiropractor should be as common place as visiting the dentist, having their hearing or eyesight tested. Likewise maintaining a healthy regime of exercise, nutrition, mental stimulation and rest are all vital for great health.
Andrew Green is a Chiropractor at Reflex Spinal Health in Reading, Berkshire. He says, “At our centre we have a team that includes chiropractors, osteopaths and massage therapists. We care for all ages and are passionate about getting kids into the centre. It is vital to have their spinal health checked. Every parent has their children’s teeth checked and teach the importance of brushing your teeth. In comparison only a very small number of people will bring their kids in to have their spinal function checked. Most kids are fine, but we now commonly see many children and young adults demonstrating issues related to a sedentary lifestyle and the use of tablets and pods.”
Reflex Spinal Health are offering FREE 15 minute spinal checks for children, and their parents, over the course of the 2017 Spinal Awareness Week.
Recent research has proven that children are at risk of ongoing back and neck pain from certain common activities including carrying heavy backpacks. Heavy school backpacks cause anterior head carriage which is directly related to disability due to neck pain. Education about postural hygiene, and avoiding poor posture, from a young age helps prevent postural degeneration.
Andrew Green says, “A study of 270 children found that children who reported having back pain or neck pain had poorer school performance that children who were asymptomatic. A normal upright posture will prevent back pain which can distract young students from their studies.”
